Chest Zip vs. Back Zip vs. Zip-Free Wetsuits

The entry style on a wetsuit isn’t just about getting in and out. It changes how much cold water gets in while you’re surfing.
Best for: warmth, winter surf, less flushing.
A chest zip entry sits higher and seals tighter, which means less water finding its way in around your neck and shoulders. All of Crooked’s wetsuits use this entry for that reason.
Best for: easy entry, beginners getting used to suiting up.
A back zip is the simplest to get in and out of. The tradeoff is a slightly looser seal at the neck.
Best for: maximum flexibility, experienced surfers who know their size well.
No zipper means nothing to break and a cleaner range of motion through the shoulders. Fit matters even more here, since there’s no zipper flap helping seal the gap.
Are chest zip wetsuits warmer?
Generally, yes.
Are back zip wetsuits easier to put on?
Yes, that’s the main appeal.
Do zip-free wetsuits leak?
Less than you’d think if the fit is right. Fit is the deciding factor here more than with any other style.
